Biography
Ionuț Luca graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, majoring in Mathematics (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees), as well as from the Faculty of Business (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees). Following the defense of his doctoral thesis Bi-criteria optimization with applications in economy, he obtained the title of Doctor of Mathematics in September 2018. His research activity focuses on mathematical optimization, with applications in peak load smoothing for various electric power generation systems, as well as in the approximation of optimization problems.
The representative result of his scientific work is the algorithm for smoothing the peak load in different electric power generation systems. Using Kuhn–Tucker-type conditions, together with Prof. Alex Mahalov (Arizona State University), he developed an electricity production diagram that maximizes the producer’s revenues, minimizes production fluctuations, and complies with the technical and commercial constraints of the energy sector. The algorithm is presented in the scientific paper Minimax rule for energy optimization, published in issue no. 151 of 2017 (A special issue in honor of Cecil “Chuck” E. Leith) of Computers & Fluids.
He has over 22 years of academic experience, teaching various courses in mathematical optimization, statistics, and probability at the Faculty of Business. He has created and coordinated numerous extracurricular programs and collaboration projects with universities from the Netherlands, Norway, and Russia, including International Business Carrousel (initiated in 2010 in the Netherlands together with Prof. Ype Starreveld), SUBFLY, SUBFLY-SD, Process Optimization and Industry 4.0 (projects funded by the EEA Grants), and Connect to University.
In parallel with his academic activity, he has been actively involved in the business environment, accumulating over 20 years of experience in executive positions such as Executive Director, COO, and CEO in various international and Romanian companies. His main professional interests in the business field include process design and optimization, as well as business diversification and development.
